Developments and Trends in Navigation Assistance

This workshop touches on many interesting topics of current human-machine co-operation research, with a clear focus on how to bring prototypes to everyday life.
Also, a time slot is foreseen to allow active participation by all attendees.

The workshop will identify and discuss common aspects and key differences of navigation assistance in different domains (automotive, surgical and rehabilitation).
Key topics will include application-dependent environment interpretation, promising human-machine interfaces (visual, haptic, auditory), human versus system adaptation (user modelling, plan recognition), and evaluation methods.

The workshop aims at letting researchers working on navigation assistance in different domains discuss required successes to achieve future navigation assistance products.
This may provide insights and guidelines to focus on in future research in this domain.

Key topics

  • Application-dependent environment interpretation: e.g. estimation of impedance characteristics of the environment, identification of (static or moving) objects that influence navigation decisions, prediction of socially-compliant motion
  • Promising human-machine interfaces: e.g. visual, haptic, auditory, tactile
  • Human versus system adaptation: e.g. user modelling, plan recognition (intention estimation)
  • Design guidelines
  • Evaluation methods of shared control approaches

Workshop category

  • Research (with outreach to industry)
  • Lecture (with panel discussion)

Organizers
This workshop is jointly organized by the FP7 project RADHAR and H-Haptics.
Three institutes organize the workshop:

  • KU Leuven: Joris De Schutter, Emmanuel Vander Poorten, Alexander Hüntemann, Eric Demeester
  • TU Delft: David Abbink
  • ALU-Freiburg: Boris Lau, Markus Kuderer

Planned follow-up
We plan to publish all presentations and a summary of the panel discussion online, either on the euRobotics 2012 site or on the RADHAR website (www.radhar.eu).

The European Robotics Forum, organized by the European robotic networks EURON, EUROP, the euRobotics Coordination Action and hosted by The Danish Technological Institute, is in the field of robotics the meeting point for engineers, scientists and business people from all over Europe. The event will take place from 5-7 March 2012 in Odense, Denmark.

More than 300 robotics researchers from industry and academia, as well as entrepreneurs and public investors, are expected to discuss the latest developments, research challenges and business opportunities for European robotics.
This year's theme of the European Robotics Forum is "European Robotics towards new horizons".

For more information, registration for the forum, and to become an exhibitor, please visit the official European Robotics Forum 2012 website at old.europeanrobotics12.eu
