Workshop, demonstrations and test-track time for autonomous vehicles and related technologies. This is Europe's first event for autonomous vehicles and expects to welcome a number of vehicles to utilise the track through the course of this two day event, the first in a quarterly series of events taking place around Europe. Additionally, we'll be running a workshop, with AutonomouStuff, on how to create a self driving car, along with a live demonstration of the fitting of sensing equipment. Paid-for attendance |

Many robots need to predict the future. Consider path planning in order to safely navigate to a goal position, or the more fundamental problem of obstacle avoidance which implicitly anticipates the undesirable consequence of a collision. There are many ways we can build anticipation into robots, but the one I would like to discuss in this talk is robots with simulation-based internal models. Illustrated with results from recent experiments I will show how such internal models can improve safety or fault detection in robots swarms, or allow us to build robots with simple ethical behaviours. Perhaps this approach might open a path to robots with artificial theory of mind? |

Although robotics is a well-established and successful technology it is currently going through a big change. Relatively unintelligent robots have been working in industry for years. But that is changing. Robots are moving out of factories and warehouses and into homes, hospitals and offices. A second wave of robotics has started in which robots are mobile and, most importantly, must now work alongside people. These next generation intelligent robots must be able to safely and naturally interact with humans. In this talk I will show the state-of-the-art in intelligent robots, illustrated with examples from both current research and emerging real-world applications. I will show how new biologically inspired approaches have radically changed the way we design robots, and that real robots are much more surprising and interesting than their science fiction counterparts. |
