The purpose of this workshop is to explore the opportunity to create a network of Robotics Digital Innovation Hubs (DIH) in Agile Production. The meeting will explore the following:
- what a DIH is expected to provide,
- the range of stakeholders in a DIH,
- how it should connect to other DIH’s and innovation structures.
- the issues surrounding delivering calls to provide funding support to third parties (FSTP).

Scope
The scope of the DIH needs to be broad and cover all key areas relevant to robotics in Agile Production. This covers agile robotics used in all forms of manufacturing and production, including collaborative robotics, strong links to Industry 4.0, and systems that transform production not only in large enterprises, but most importantly in SMEs where the potential gain in productivity is greatest. Agile production techniques allow for greater complexity in manufacturing, greater product variability, individualised production and greater efficiency in production support. Such systems have the potential to impact across all production sectors from food processing, to recycling and conventional manufacturing processes. The introduction of agile robotics can help to retain and re-shore production in Europe in a wide range of industries.
Given the national and regional differences where companies have not only a wide range of product types, but also different degrees of automation, a network of Digital Innovation Hubs is likely to the stimulation and digitization of industries, particularly those which are not always “reachable” by current EU-level activities. Linking regional hubs across Europe allows for the sharing of best practice across borders while keeping activities regionally grounded. The DIH network also provides a focus for the synchronisation of national, regional and European investments.

Attendees: Who should attend?
The workshop is aimed at all organisations that have an interest in contributing to a network of DIHs in Agile Production. This includes all stakeholders even though they may not become directly involved in a proposal to host or run a DIH the gathering of viewpoints is critical to the success of any DIH.
There are a number of other EU-funded and many national initiatives that work within this field (e.g http://i4ms.eu/). This growing network on innovation hubs and other initiatives needs to be drawn into the conversation about how the pan-European network of DIHs might operate and how it should engage with existing innovation structures in the EU.
DIHs are also expected to be “deeply rooted” in regions and the network is expected to span multiple regions in Europe. Linking up national, regional EU based funding is a critical part of the integration and sustainability of a DIH.
What will you get from the workshop?
The workshop is designed to achieve the following objectives:
a) To make potential stakeholders in the DIH aware of how a DIH should operate and the expected delivery back to stakeholders.
b) To connect different actors in the production environment with technology providers, end users (customers) and other organisations with an interest in developing and using the network of DIHs. This includes a strong B2B component, as many SMEs in Europe produce components that feed global supply chains.
c) For those considering participating in a DIH an insight into the mechanisms available and the obligations on the organisers from an EU funding perspective.
d) To understand how EU, national and regional funds might be leveraged to support a network of Agile Production DIHs and their connection to other DIH networks.
The workshop will also provide an opportunity to assess the scope and engagement in the DIH and to plan future events that support the delivery of the work programme.
