FIRST® LEGO® League (FLL) is a program that supports children and youngsters in order to introduce them to science and technology in a sporty atmosphere. It is never too early to discover STEM (science, technology, engeneering, mathematics)! FIRST® LEGO® League Junior was created by an initiative of the American foundation FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) and LEGO and has been developed to bring children from six to ten years to the STEM theme. The children will be introduced to the topics by the colorful bricks they already know. Accompanied by two or more adult coaches, the teams (up to six team members) explore real existing problems such as ressources, recycling, energy, or the coexistence of humans and animals. They create a Show Me poster that presents their discovery and their team, and they build a motorized model of LEGO bricks. On the "journey" the children learn to work together in a team and explore the wonders of science and technology. The focus of the project are the FIRST® Core Values such as respectful approach, shared experience and critical thinking. At the end of each season, the teams meet for an exhibition to present their results, share ideas and have fun together. |

ERW2019 Central Opening Event

Women in Digital and Robotics: a must-have

Participation at the event is free, no prior registration is required. The workshop is in English. In Europe, there are four times more men than women with ICT-related studies, and the share of men working in the digital sector is over three times greater than women’s share. The panel will investigate how: women can be more involved in product development, to recruit more women and engage them in high-level decision making in senior leadership levels, public authorities and educators can encourage girls to take STEM education using creative and innovative technologies, in order to reduce the gender-gap in digital. The panel aims to draw a set of recommendations for building a digital and technological future in which women have a strong presence and involvement. |

Robots at school - ideas for pan-European citizen science projects

Public participation in science has seen an increase with interested volunteers, amateur scientists, students, and educators promoting new ways to advance our understanding of the world. Among these, robots generate immediate interest and captivate the audience, which make them promising tools for introducing students to STEM skills and careers. This session is to present: Ideas and concrete examples of pan-European robotics projects with an impact on culture, ecology, history, and economy, designed to make STEM education attractive How schools, youth clubs, science and nature museums, boy scouts and girl scouts, culture groups, can be part of robotics-related citizen science projects Robotics education projects that can contribute to raising awareness, building capacity, and strengthening disadvantaged communities or groups Students’ opinions about robots used in the classroom as a tool to expand their knowledge of STEM careers opportunities. The workshop aims to explore successful robotics education initiatives that could be implemented at pan-European level in order to better prepare our students for future jobs and professions. |
